Surgery at trusted public and private hospitals across Brisbane, Logan, and the Redlands

We specialise in endocrine surgery for thyroid, parathyroid & adrenal conditions.

Thyroid Surgery

Whether it’s thyroid cancer, a growing goitre, or a suspicious nodule, Professor Gundara provides expert advice and minimally invasive surgery for faster recovery and excellent outcome.

Parathyroid Surgery

Hyperparathyroidism can cause symptoms like fatigue and bone loss. Professor Gundara accurately identifies cases needing surgery and offers clear guidance, with strong outcomes from specialist care.

Adrenal Surgery

Adrenal tumours are often found by chance and can be complex. Professor Gundara explains your options clearly and offers laparoscopic or open surgery based on what’s safest for you.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Some thyroid nodules don’t need surgery. Professor Gundara offers radiofrequency ablation, a non-surgical option to shrink benign nodules with minimal downtime and no general anaesthetic.

Clear & expert advice starts with a conversation

Whether you’ve been recently diagnosed or want a second opinion, we’ll help you understand your options.

When to see an endocrine surgeon

If you’ve been diagnosed with an endocrine condition, or something concerning has shown up on a recent scan or blood test, an endocrine surgeon can help clarify what’s happening and what your options are. Early advice often leads to better outcomes.

Professor Gundara specialises in assessing and managing conditions that affect the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands. He works closely with referring GPs and specialists to ensure patients receive accurate information and appropriate care, whether surgery is required or not.

Common reasons for referral include:

  • Thyroid nodules, goitre or thyroid cancer
  • Overactive parathyroid glands (hyperparathyroidism)
  • Calcium imbalance
  • Adrenal nodules or suspected adrenal tumours
  • Hormone-producing conditions
  • Genetic endocrine syndromes (e.g. MEN)
  • Second opinions on complex or borderline cases

If you’re uncertain about what your diagnosis means or what to do next, seeking advice from a specialist endocrine surgeon is a sound next step.

Meet Professor Justin Gundara

Endocrine & General Surgeon

I’ve always believed surgery should be about more than just technical skill. It should be thoughtful, considered, and centred around the individual sitting across from me. That means listening carefully, explaining things clearly, and only recommending surgery when I believe it’s genuinely the best option.

I’ve trained in some of the world’s leading endocrine and hepato-pancreato-biliary surgical units, completed a PhD in molecular cancer biology, and now hold a Professorial role with Griffith University. I’ve performed thousands of operations and been lucky enough to help shape how endocrine surgery is taught and practised across Australia and New Zealand.

What drives me is making complex problems feel manageable. Whether it’s a worrying scan or a difficult diagnosis, I aim to give people a sense of clarity and control over their next step. The goal is always the same: safe, well-considered care, backed by evidence and experience.

Every patient deserves to feel confident in their plan and the person delivering it. That’s what I aim to provide, every time.

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s normal to feel uncertain when surgery is being discussed. These answers cover some of the questions patients often ask early on. If you still need clarity, we’re only a call or message away.

Do I need a referral to make an appointment?

Yes, we require a referral from your GP or specialist. This helps ensure that any investigations or procedures you may need are properly coordinated and Medicare rebates can apply where eligible.

Will I definitely need surgery?

Not necessarily. Many patients are referred for an opinion only. Some conditions don’t require surgery at all, and others may benefit from a watch-and-wait approach. You’ll be given clear advice and all the options, including when it’s best to do nothing.

What conditions does Professor Gundara treat?

He specialises in endocrine surgery, including thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal conditions. This includes cancer, hormone-producing tumours, calcium imbalance, nodules, and genetic endocrine syndromes. He also offers select general surgery procedures like hernia and gallbladder surgery.

I’ve had scans and blood tests already – should I bring them?

Yes, please bring any imaging, pathology results, or specialist letters to your appointment. It helps us avoid unnecessary duplication and gives a clearer picture from the start.

How long will I need to wait for surgery?

This depends on the urgency of your condition and the type of procedure needed. In most cases, patients are booked within a timely window. Urgent cases will be prioritised.
